Are Moses Baskets SIDS Safe?
SIDS is a natural worry for all parents of newborn babies and making sure your baby is sleeping in a safe environment should be one of your most important concerns.
Moses baskets are very safe if bought with the above-mentioned points in mind. Careful attention should be paid to the safety and fit of the mattress and fitted sheet and the basket should be of a good size to allow air to circulate and made from a safe breathable material.
It is important that your baby sleeps on their back and the basket should not be cluttered up with bulky bedding so NO pillows, pads or pods.
Although most Moses Baskets come with mattresses, depending on the quality you might want to consider buying an alternative hypoallergenic mattress made from natural materials. If you are not sure about sizing, some manufacturers offer a made to measure service.
As I always say, you should also ensure that your mattress complies with your country’s current safety standards (such as British Standard BS EN 1466:2014 for the UK)
As a final note of reassurance, The American Academy of Pediatrics includes Moses baskets as a safe sleep product that protect against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
What Should I Look For When Buying A Moses Basket?
When choosing your ideal baby basket, you will need to consider a variety of things from airflow, materials, size, optional extras to name but a few. Here is a list of my TOP recommendations to look for and be aware of when buying your baby basket:
- Make sure they are made from a breathable material like knitted palm leaf or have mesh sides.
- Make sure they come with or buy a suitable well-fitting mattress that is no thinner than 5cm (2 inches)
- Ensure it will fit into a safe, sturdy stand it does not come with one.
- Long sturdy handles that meet in the middle for carrying and that flop down outside the basket when put down.
- Conforms to your country’s safety standards.
How Long Do Moses Baskets Last For?
It is important that you only use your Moses Basket for as long as your baby can fit comfortably and is not able to roll, push themselves up on their hands or sit. In addition, for most baskets, there is an advised weight limit of no more than 9 Kgs (20 Lbs) in weight.
Therefore, when buying a Moses Basket you should be aware that they will probably only be in use for 3-4 months and certainly no longer than six months maximum.
Moses baskets can, however, be used as storage for toys once your little one has outgrown them and you can then use them a second or third time around.
The size of the basket you buy will depend on how long your baby can continue to sleep in them and on your baby’s development.
Can A Baby Sleep Overnight In A Moses Basket?
Newborn babies can most definitely sleep overnight in a Moses Basket as long as they are in the same room as their parents or carer.
Young babies benefit hugely from being close to you when they sleep during the first 6 months of life and a Moses Basket takes up very little space and can easily be positioned next to your bed.
How Should A Newborn Sleep In A Moses Basket?
Regardless of whether it is a daytime nap or going down to bed after your bedtime routine… Putting your baby to sleep in a Moses Basket should be no different to putting them down in a full-size crib.
The Lullaby Trust says that ‘You should always place your baby on their back to sleep and not on their front or side’ no matter where they are sleeping or at what time of day.
You should, therefore, follow your usual bedtime routine – be sure to check out my Getting A Newborn To Sleep At Night post for loads of helpful sleeping tips! – and place your baby on their back, safely swaddled and in the “feet to foot” position, with their feet at the end of the Moses Basket.
The basket should not be placed near a window and the room should be at the correct temperature between 18-20℃. (64-68℉)
Do I Really Need A Moses Basket Stand?
YES.
It is generally advisable to put your Moses Basket on a stand.
You should not leave your basket or bassinet on a high flat surface such as a table or bed so I would always opt for a suitable sturdy stand if your basket does not already come with one.
It is also far easier for you if your baby is in a basket at the correct height for you to settle them and check on them.
Are Moses Baskets Worth It?
The Bottom Line is YES!
If you are looking for an inexpensive crib for your newborn that does not take up much space in your bedroom that can be moved around the house easily and enables your baby to sleep anywhere, then a well made Moses Basket is a great choice and definitely worth the money.
They make your little one feel safe and secure and you can have them next to your bed for easy nighttime feeding. They also have the added benefit that when your baby is ready to move into a cot you can place the Moses Basket in the crib initially to get them used to the idea of sleeping there.
All in all, a baby basket is a wonderful investment and will serve you well for years to come!
