What Should I Look For When Buying A Moses Basket?
When choosing your ideal baby basket, you will need to consider a variety of things from airflow, materials, size, and optional extras to name but a few.
Here is a list of my top recommendations and key features to look for and be aware of when buying your baby basket:
- Make sure they are made from a breathable material like knitted palm leaf or have mesh window sides.
- Make sure they come with or buy a suitable well-fitting foam mattress that is no thinner than 5cm (2 inches).
- Ensure it will fit into a safe, sturdy stand it does not come with one.
- If the basket comes with long sturdy handles, ensure the handles meet in the middle for carrying but can flop down outside the basket when put down.
- Conforms to your country’s safety standards.
- Make sure it fits baby’s room! (You’d be surprised how often this is overlooked)
Other factors to consider include:
- Does it have a cotton liner or cotton cover?
- Does it have a quilted mattress? (This creates a smoother sleeping surface for baby)
- Is it a firm mattress? (A firm mattress reduces the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
- If it’s important to you, is the Moses basket made from organic materials?
- Does it come with an adjustable hood?
- Is it a washable liner? (This is super important to know in case there are any accidents!)
- Would you like a traditional design or a contemporary design?
With so many baby products to choose from, hopefully, these questions will help to narrow down your search to identify the best Moses basket for your family.

Where Can I Buy Moses Baskets From?
There are loads of choices for where to buy your moses basket from.
The most obvious is Amazon.com… however, you can also get amazing deals on Moses baskets from suppliers directly such as Mamas & Papas or Little Green Sheep.
Or even through department stores such as John Lewis, Kinder Valley, Target and Walmart.
REMEMBER: Buying a Moses Basket is always dependent on your financial situation and if you choose to buy second-hand, ensure the basket meets current safety standards and is fit for purpose.
How Long Do Moses Baskets Last For?
It is important that you only use your Moses Basket for as long as your baby can fit comfortably and is not able to roll, push themselves up on their hands or sit up.
In addition, for most baskets, there is an advised weight limit of no more than 9 Kgs (20 Lbs) in weight.
Therefore, when buying a baby basket you should be aware that they will probably only be a sleep space until baby is 3-4 months of age… and certainly no longer than six months at a maximum.
Moses baskets can, however, be used as a storage basket for toys or a laundry basket once your little one has outgrown them and you can then use them a second or third time around.
The size of the basket you buy will depend on how long your baby can continue to sleep in them and on your baby’s development.
Are Moses Baskets SIDS Safe?
Moses baskets are very safe if bought with the knowledge that careful attention should be paid to the safety and fit of the mattress and fitted sheet and the basket should be of a good size to allow air to circulate and made from a safe breathable material.
It is important that your baby sleeps on their back and the basket should not be cluttered up with bulky bedding… So no pillows, pads or pods.
Although most Moses Baskets come with firm foam mattresses, depending on the quality you might want to consider buying an alternative hypoallergenic mattress made from natural materials.
If you are not sure about sizing, some manufacturers offer a made-to-measure service.
TOP TIP: As I always say, you should also ensure that your foam mattress complies with your country’s current safety standards (such as British Standard BS EN 1466:2014 for the UK). As a final note of reassurance, The American Academy of Pediatrics includes Moses baskets as a safe sleep product that protect against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Can A Baby Sleep Overnight In A Moses Basket?
Yes, Newborn babies can most definitely sleep overnight in a Moses Basket bassinet as long as they are in the same room as their parents or carer.
Young babies benefit hugely from being close to you when they sleep during the first 6 months of life and a Moses Basket bassinet takes up very little space and can easily be positioned next to your bed.
How Should A Newborn Sleep In A Moses Basket?
Regardless of whether it is a daytime nap or going down to bed after your bedtime routine… Putting your baby to sleep in a Moses Basket bassinet should be no different to putting them down in a full-size crib.
The Lullaby Trust says that ‘You should always place your baby on their back to sleep and not on their front or side’ no matter where they are sleeping or at what time of day.
You should, therefore, follow your usual bedtime routine – be sure to check out my Getting A Newborn To Sleep At Night post for loads of helpful sleeping tips – and place your baby on their back, safely swaddled and in the “feet to foot” position, with their feet at the end of the Moses Basket.
NOTE: The basket should not be placed near a window and the room should be at the correct temperature between 18-20℃. (64-68℉).
Do I Really Need A Moses Basket Stand?
Yes. It is generally advisable to put your Moses Basket on a stand.
You should not leave your basket or bassinet on an elevated surface such as a table or bed so I would always opt for a suitable sturdy stand if your basket does not already come with one.
It is also far easier for you if your baby is in a basket at the correct height for you to settle them and check on them.
Are Moses Baskets Worth It?
The bottom line is yes, Moses Baskets are worth it!
If you are looking for an inexpensive crib for your newborn that does not take up much space in your bedroom that can be moved around the house easily and enables your baby to sleep anywhere, then a well-made Moses Basket bassinet is a great choice and definitely worth the money.
They make your little one feel safe and secure and you can have them next to your bed for easy nighttime feeding. They also have the added benefit that when your baby is ready to move into a cot you can place the Moses Basket bassinet in the crib initially to get them used to the idea of sleeping there.
All in all, a baby basket is a wonderful investment and will serve you well for years to come.
